Voiceover Recording and Editing

Doodly allows for recording voiceovers only with zero editing or adjusting capabilities within the software and although this might appear tempting at first, there are some very important details to be aware of before beginning to record in Doodly.

Preview Window

The preview window that appears while recording within Doodly looks as if it is a nice touch but it plays back at 10fps (frames per second) making the doodle appear as if it is lagging and slow.

Editing

This is non-existent in Doodly. Doodly is not an audio editing piece of software and therefore does not come with the tools that are available to us if we record with software such as Adobe Audition or Audacity.

There is no cropping capability or overwriting capability after recording. You can delete, fade in and fade out and that is it.

Recording

The quality highly depends on your microphone.

Exporting

There is no ability to export just the audio as a .mp3 or .wav file. The only audio that can be exported is the .ogg file which is mainly utilized on Android devices. This forces us to get created and export to either an .ogg file or a .mp4 file and then export the audio from there.

Note: The above limitations make it not a wise decision to record within Doodly.

Professional Editing

We have software available to use that allows us to record and edit audio. There are free audio editing software packages listed in question #5, Where can I obtain free commercial use assets?, of our Top 50 Doodly Frequently Asked Questions.

Doodly does not offer built in audio editing features. You are limited to basic functions like deleting the track, fading in, and fading out. For tasks like cropping or overwriting audio, you will need to use dedicated external programs like Audacity or Adobe Audition.

When you record audio directly inside the platform, the preview window drops the playback frame rate to ten frames per second. This low frame rate makes the animation appear delayed and sluggish during the recording process.

The platform restricts audio exports to the ogg file format, which is typically used for Android devices. You cannot directly save your recordings as mp3 or wav files. To get those formats, you must first save your project as an ogg or mp4 file and then extract the audio using outside software.

It is generally not recommended to record your audio within the platform due to its severe limitations. The lack of editing tools, restricted export options, and laggy preview screen make it much more effective to use professional audio recording software instead.

When polishing your audio, you should remove any 60 hertz background hums and distracting room echoes. It is best to edit out heavy breaths but leave natural pauses so you still sound human. Additionally, always make sure your background music is low enough that it never competes with your spoken words, and remember you can always use the undo command if a change sounds bad.
